Maurhy F. guest of honor

A painting
of the living

In Maurhy F.'s canvases, there is a singular way of making bodies speak — silhouettes that wear clothes the way one carries a story.

Trained in visual arts in Abidjan, the artist develops a body of work deeply rooted in African cultural heritage: fabric patterns, hairstyles, and everyday gestures become territories of beauty and memory.

His unique mixed-relief technique — between painting and sculpture — gives each canvas a striking tactile dimension, where corrugated cardboard, plaster, and pigments layer to create works that literally vibrate under the light.

Who is Fondio Maurhy?

Origins & Training

Originally from northern Ivory Coast, Fondio Maurhy is a largely self-taught artist. From 1991 to 1993, he attended evening classes at the National Institute of Arts (INA), now INSAAC.

At the same time, he frequented the studios of established painters and benefited from the mentorship of Tamsir Dia and Youssouf Dekimbirila.

Subsequently, Maurhy developed a personal artistic approach, moving away from what he considers a purely academic process.

Maurhy has exhibited his works in Abidjan, where he lives and works, as well as abroad — in Europe and America.

The Artistic Approach

Mixed relief is the signature of Fondio Maurhy's artistic approach — a fusion between 2D and 3D, between painting and sculpture.

Everything rests on a base of collages of various materials: papier-mâché, cardboard, plant textures. The color choices are a subtle blend of natural pigments, coffee granules, acrylic, and oil.

The artist oscillates between symbolism, figurative art, and decoration. His works are a call to build a harmonious world.

Mixed relief is, literally and figuratively, a way of expressing the diversity of human relationships — made of divergences, interactions, tolerance, and acceptance.
